Each role that is filled during a club meeting has a
dual purpose. It is first designed to provide some sort of feedback to
participants in the meeting, depending on the role itself, in an effort to help
everybody there to improve their communication skills. Secondly, the act
of filling a role during a meeting gives that member additional experience in
both communication and leadership skills.
The following are the roles that contribute to each
meeting and a brief description:
TOASTMASTER
The
Toastmaster is your host/emcee for the meeting.
It is the assignment of the Toastmaster to introduce the speakers
with their prepared presentations and to keep the meeting on time.
| . |
GENERAL
EVALUATOR |
The
General Evaluator is the emcee of the evaluation segment of the program
and introduces each of the members of his or her evaluation team.
This individual also comments on all phases of the meeting as a whole. The
intent is to take a broad, yet comprehensive, view of the meeting and try
to point out both what was good, and where and how improvement can be
made.
| . |
TIMER
All
speeches are timed to help the speakers to learn to speak more effectively
in their allotted time period.
| . |
GRAMMARIAN
/
WORD
MASTER
No
one is perfect - we all make mistakes. The Grammarian helps us to know
when we do make mistakes, and of course, corrects us.
It's our job to be more careful in the future. The Word Master
introduces us to a new word for all of us to incorporate into our speaking
today.
| . |
AH
COUNTER
We
all fill our conversation and speeches with ah’s and um’s
that can detract from the value of our speech. The AH Counter helps us to
become aware of how often we use filler words so that we can change this
habit and improve our communication skills.
.
VOTE
COUNTER
All
members are eligible to vote for Best Speaker, Best Evaluator and Best
Table Topics, The Vote Counter collects the ballots and reports to the
Toastmaster so that the ribbons can be awarded.
.
JOKEMASTER
Tells
a humorous story or joke.
.
TABLE
TOPICS
The
purpose of Table Topics is to give our members an opportunity to speak on
their feet - without prior notice. During this portion of the program the
member is given a topic upon which he or she is asked to speak
extemporaneously for 1 ½
– 2 ½ minutes. Not all members will be called upon, but any
member is subject to being called.
Guests are also welcome to volunteer.
.
MAIN
SPEAKERS
The
speakers have prepared their own speeches - the topics and content are their
own. Each speaker is working on a specific project in his or her
Communication & Leadership Manual or Advanced Manual. The length of most manual speeches
is from 5 to 7 minutes.
.
INDIVIDUAL
EVALUATORS
An
Evaluator has been assigned to each main speaker for the purpose of
commenting constructively on the speaker's performance. This is an honest
appraisal of the speech and the speaker’s delivery. Both Evaluator and
Speaker alike should always keep in mind that the legitimate purpose of
evaluation is improvement.
